Why Criminals Target Homes
Whilst a lot of burglaries are random, sometimes houses are targeted for specific reasons. Some houses have that extra feature or element that makes them more appealing to criminals – whether it’s design, location, or contents.

Obvious Lack of Security
If you have no security features in your home, you’re more likely to become a target for thieves. No obvious signs of things such as CCTV and motion sensors will make your home seem a lot more attractive than the house which looks highly secured.
Obviously, security doesn’t have to be obvious; having a burglar alarm in the home will also alert you to unwanted company.
Empty Homes
Although movies and TV shows like to scare us with depictions of houses being broken into as we sleep at night, the fact is most burglaries will take place during the day. Burglars will look for easy targets and what’s easier than a house with nobody home? This is why they target properties during the day – everyone is out at work/school.
It’s important that you don’t make it obvious that your home is unintended for a long period of time. Don’t leave your curtains shut all day, or let your garden get out of control.
Houses in Low Traffic Locations
Unfortunately, your peaceful home in the lovely quiet location could actually be the reason for why your house is broken into. When faced with the choice between breaking into a home that is surrounded by other homes, or the one sat alone at the end of the quiet cul-de-sac – the quiet one will be the unlucky one each time.
There are less people to potentially catch them in the act – this is very attractive to criminals. There is nothing you can really do to stop this, apart from making sure that your home is secure.
Easy Places to Hide
Is the landscape of your home making you a potential target? There is actually some truth to this worrying fact. Criminals like having places to hide – and your beautifully landscaped garden may be given this to them quite easily.
This includes elements such as low hanging trees or bushes directly under your window – perfect for watching your home.
