The Problem:
The conductor’s role is to create and interpret the music, which involves changes in time, speed, dynamics and mood. It is up to the musicians, including the organist, to follow his or her directions at the same time as reading their sheet music. Normally, organists manage with a mirror, so they can see behind them to keep in time with the conductor. However, this is less than optimal in many ancient buildings and churches where performances take place.
This time The City of Bristol choir knew that in two of the venues they were performing in the organist, Richard Johnson, would have no view of the conductor at all. They decided to do things differently than usual and took one of our CCTV systems with them!
BWS Standfast's Solution
It consisted of a high-quality camera on a tripod, trained on the conductor and a decent colour monitor placed in the organ loft which the organist could easily see. This was set up in two of the concert venues where the organist would not otherwise have been able to see the conductor at all. Furthermore, it was like looking at the conductor directly, rather than a mirror image which is the usual scenario when using a mirror. The set up was highly successful and as always the concerts were performed with great panache.
This is an unusual use of our CCTV cameras! However, we were delighted to be able to assist the City of Bristol choir and look forward to doing the same for other musical organisations.
