Changing the locks in your home could be the difference between being safe and secure and having your home broken into.
So why do so little people do it?
It’s been reported that around 58% of movers are happy to leave the locks exactly as they are. 30% of people will change all the locks, whilst just 12% think that the front door is the only one worth changing.
Although the most obvious reason, moving into a new property isn’t the only time in which changing the locks is a good idea. There are several other occasions in which you really should consider changing your locks to keep you, your family and possessions safe.
Change in Relationship Status
If you’ve recently split up with your live-in partner and they’ve moved out, now might be a really good time to change the locks. You don’t know who they’ve given a key to in the past or they might be tempted to let themselves into the house that they’ve seen as their own for a long time. Emotions run high during a breakup – it’s not unusual for them to let themselves into the home whilst you’re out to reclaim something they see as theirs.
This doesn’t just apply to a romantic breakup. If you’ve fallen out with a friend who has spare keys or your roommate has moved out for good, these are all situations in which you should consider getting your locks changed.
Lost Keys
Losing your house keys is actually really common – whether it’s losing them whilst on a night out or putting them down somewhere and forgetting to pick them back up. It doesn’t matter how you lost them, what matters is that they have been left somewhere and you don’t know who might pick them up. It’s not worth risking your safety – get your locks changed ASAP to give you peace of mind.
Burglary
Although changing your locks is often a precautionary method to avoid a burglary taking place, sometimes it has to be done because one has already happened. In this instance, it’s not really a case of your keys falling into the wrong hands (although it’s still a problem), it’s more looking at how they broke into your home in the first place. Did they break the locks? How weak were your locks to begin with?
If you’ve been a victim of a home burglary, it’s essential that you get your locks changed as soon as you can.
